Marge MackinThe family moved to Redondo Beach, Calif., when Marge was 6. Her creativity expressed itself in her stained glass creations and sewing. She was a skilled seamstress and made many of her family's clothes. She was always nicely dressed and loved to wear pieces of her large collection of old and new turquoise jewelry. Marge loved to walk, dance and travel to foreign countries. She will be remembered for her wonderful vim and vigor, sense of humor and singing old songs like "Red Lips, Kiss My Blues Away," quoting phrases such as "Think of it as an adventure," in response to any situation, and creating personalized birthday poems which she wrote in greeting cards to her family.

Bettie Jane Conley

February 3, 1923 - February 12, 2010

Bettie Jane (Johnson) Conley was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Kimball, S.D., to Charles J. Johnson and Laura Mae (Will) Johnson. She attended grade school and high school in Kimball, graduating in 1941. From there, she went to a business college in Rapid City and worked for the U.S. Civil Service in Washington, D.C. In 1942, she transferred to Seattle where she married her high school sweetheart, James Dwain (J.D.) Conley, on March 5, 1943.

Bettie Jane ConleyThey returned to Kimball in 1946 and became the owners of Kimball Dairy. After a couple of years of life on the farm, Bettie Jane joined Stanley Home Products Inc. To her, hosting Stanley parties and recruiting new dealers would be an easier way to make a living - better than milking cows! Soon after joining, she convinced her husband to come on board with Stanley - this led to a 25-year sales career. Stanley took them from South Dakota to North Dakota, then joining Stanley's foreign sales department in Calgary, Alberta, and Vancouver, British Columbia, and back to the USA in Phoenix, Ariz., and ending in Waterloo, Iowa.

At age 49, Bettie Jane and J.D. purchased a mom-and-pop motel in Prescott, Ariz. This was a bit of a change from the sales work she was used to! Missing interacting with people and the sales bug she had acquired working all those years at Stanley led her in a new direction - real estate. It didn't take much convincing from her husband (already in real estate) to stop making beds and start selling houses. In 1974, she became the first woman to be hired by the Pauley and McDonald Realtor group and, in 1979, J.D. and Jane started A-Action Realty. Real estate was so much more than just selling houses. It opened doors to many opportunities and Jane embedded herself within the Prescott community.

She was an active leader in the Soroptimist Club, helping with fundraising activities. She was also active in the Prescott Chamber of Commerce, where she was a founding member of the Prescott Ambassadors. She was a member of the Clarets Club of Sacred Heart Church, and was the charter president of the Prescott Noon Lioness Club. She was a passionate member of that organization and served as president three times. Being involved in her community was one of her greatest pleasures.

She loved to socialize and could usually be heard laughing wherever she went. Bettie Jane was nonstop her entire life - she was even given a charm for her bracelet engraved "too busy and don't have time" - but she was always on time, and for those who knew her and worked with her, she made time. When she did take time to relax, you would probably find her playing cards, crocheting, reconstructing clothes, or baking. She loved purses, shoes, and the color purple. She never threw anything away - if you needed ANYTHING, she probably had it in her purse!

Grateful for having shared her life are husband J.D.; daughter Melanie and husband Robert Nuttall of Scottsdale, Ariz.; granddaughters Ragen and Brandi; grandson Todd; great-grandson Julian; and great-granddaughter Izabel; son Michael and wife Debby of Waterloo, Iowa, and granddaughters Melissa and Heather, her husband Eric Lukes of Stewartville, Minn., great-granddaughters Isabelle and Lily; daughter Marilyn and husband Bill Carney of Prescott Valley, Ariz., and granddaughter Jessica and grandson Jacob; son Mark and wife Patricia of Prescott and grandson Ruston James; and sister-in-law Ellen Johnson of Livermore, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald M. Johnson, of Livermore and granddaughter Ragen Nuttall of Scottsdale.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, a nonprofit organization, at 1065 Ruth St., Suite 104, Prescott, AZ 86301.

Viewing at Wakelin Family Funeral Home is Friday, Feb. 19, 303 Cortez St., Prescott, AZ; 445-2221; family: 4-5 p.m.; friends: 5-7 p.m. Vigil Scripture Service with Tony Humphrey 7 p.m. Mass Service is Saturday, Feb. 20, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 Fleury St., Prescott, AZ, 1 pm. Helen Moser

Helen MoserHelen Moser, devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, went to be with her Lord on March 20, 2010. Helen was born on June 8, 1925, in Argo, Ill., to Martin and Catherine Szkolka. Excelling in her schooling, she met the love of her life, Leonard Otto Moser, and married in 1948. One year later, she began her journey as a mother with the birth of her first son, Len, with sons Barry and Greg following soon after.

Taking on management of her home and the Catholic schooling of her sons, Helen quickly mastered the art of home life, caring with detail for her husband and children. Her love of art and good eye for design inspired her entrepreneurial effort to finance college tuitions by designing, sewing and installing exquisite window treatments for many beautiful homes in the Chicago area.

Helen and Len embraced the empty nest years, exploring the country as they maintained residence in Illinois. There, in 1986, Len died after a long battle with cancer. Having visited Arizona during one of their trips, Helen, smitten by the beauty of Sedona, courageously relocated there. She thoughtfully designed a home on land with a spectacular view of the formations. As a master gardener, she tended the plants there and wherever she lived, with almost as much care and thought as she had given her family. In her later years, her devoted son, Greg, cared lovingly for her in Prescott.

Helen is survived by her sons Len, Barry and Greg; her daughter-in-law, Terri; her grandchildren, Louise Siriani, Jacob, Brittany, Courtney, David, Elaine, Michael and Daniel Moser, and her great-grandchildren, Tony and Alec Siriani.

A Memorial Mass, presided by the Rev. Art Gramaje, will be at 10 a.m. on April 6, 2010, at Sacred Heart Church in Prescott.

William Isaac "Big Bill" Watts

1925 - 2010

William Isaac Watts (1925-2010)On the 4th of July 1925, an ingenious man was born in Valier, Ill., to Thomas J. Watts and Julia (Dalrymple) Watts; they named him William Isaac Watts after his great-grandfather. His family knew him as "Big Bill." He passed away in Prescott, Ariz., on April 8, 2010, at the age of 84 years, nine months and four days.

His first years in the southern Illinois coal-mining community he was surrounded by a loving and hard-working family who were key in America's coal business since 1847. Times had changed and in 1927 his parents moved to Huntington Park, Calif., where Bill was raised. Life was tough from 1929 to 1941 during the Great Depression. However, his father, a produce truck driver, always had plenty of good food. The hard times taught Bill lifelong values of discipline, dedication and commitment. He enjoyed learning math, science and football in school, as well as hunting, fishing and the general outdoors he learned from his father and grandfather. William Isaac Watts (1925-2010) - Air Force pictureHis years at South Gate High were overshadowed by World War II. He had lost a cousin in the RCAF in 1941, so in 1943, Bill, like most of America's young men and women, went in the service to do his part. He became a navigator in the 9th Air Force 315th Troop Carrier Group on the C-47 Dakota in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was in the European Theater of Operations where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and Operation Varsity the deepest penetration air drop ever performed. After the war he settled in the Pacific Northwest where his parents had moved. He graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in Engineering when he met his loving wife Margaret E. Bruneau. They courted and Bill finished school and landed a job during the difficult post war years. They were engaged February 13, 1948, and married June 3, 1950. He spent 35 years with The Boeing Company. He was part of the engineering design and latter management teams on the famous B-52 Bomber, the 707, 720 and 727 commercial aeroplane programs, the Minuteman and Peacekeeper ICBM Programs. Bill was part of the aerospace engineering marvels that shaped and protected this nation. Like many others of this generation, he always stated that it was his and previous generations that sacrificed for our freedoms today. Don't waste it with mediocre change.

William Isaac Watts (1925-2010) - baby pictureBill and Margaret celebrated the births of three children in Seattle, Wash., and moved to Bountiful, Utah, where they raised them. Bill bought a ranch in Roosevelt, Utah, to teach his sons values. After their sons graduated from high school between 1969 and 1976, Bill and Margaret moved to Lompoc, Calif., then Montana and back to Utah before retiring from the Boeing Company in 1986. They designed and built a home overlooking the Snake River in Buhl, Idaho, where they lived until 1994 when they moved to the milder climate in Prescott, Ariz.

Bill is survived by his three sons, Stephen of Camp Verde, Gregory and his wife Val of Prescott and Marcus of Irvine, Calif.; his grandchildren Nydia, Nathan, Robert Leary, Thomas, William, Valerie Kretchmer, Hillary and Miranda; and great-grandchildren.

It is with much sadness that Big Bill, a true patriot and gentleman, one of the last of the greatest generations that ever lived, has now journeyed across the greatest divide and is now resting in peace with his departed loved ones; his recently deceased wife Margaret (Jan. 23, 2010), and his parents, Thomas and Julia Watts.

Visitation will be at 9 a.m. and then a Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 12, 2010, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. His interment will be later that day at 1:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery of Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Center Adult Day Services, 844 Sunset Ave., Prescott, AZ 86305 (to support families dealing with Alzheimer's) or a charity of your own choice.

Hampton Funeral Home assisted the family with final arrangements.

Bernard (Ben) H. Geyer

Bernard (Ben) H. GeyerBernard (Ben) H. Geyer passed away June 3, 2010, at Rolling Hills Manor in Prescott, Ariz. He was born Aug. 13, 1926, in Hamilton, Ohio, the son of Bernard and Olivia (Frisz) Geyer. Ben was 83 years old.

Ben graduated from MIT with a master's degree in electronic engineering. His career was spent in research and development at G.E., in radar technology and computers in Syracuse, N.Y. He and Emma moved to Prescott in 1990 after his retirement.

Ben loved woodworking and looking at life through the lens of a camera. He was an award-winning photographer.

In 1949, Ben and two others who were junior engineers at G.E. designed an "automatic umpire" system. That system was built and used in 1950 during the Dodgers' spring training camp. However, the umpires didn't like it and the players weren't overly enthusiastic about it and that was the end of it. After QuesTec came into use, an article appeared in the Syracuse newspaper dated Sunday July 20, 2003, about the automatic umpire system Ben and friends built. Ben was quoted in the article: "An engineer prides himself on being ahead of his time, though I must admit that 50 years is a pretty good margin."

The family wishes to thank the staff of Rolling Hills Manor for the wonderful care they gave Ben and the family.

Ben is survived by his bride of 56 years, Emma; his daughters, Diane (Joseph) Woods of Liverpool, N.Y., and Joyce (Ray) Van Orden of Prescott, Ariz.; and sons Bruce of Portland, Ore., Steve (Marytheresa) of Liverpool, N.Y., and Doug (Debi) of Covernty, R.I. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and siblings; sister Rosemary (Marv) Rickling of Las Vegas, Nev.; and brothers Jack (Mary Lou) of Hamilton, Ohio, Dick of Marathon, Fla., and Jim (Judy) of Youngsville, N.C. He was predeceased by his brother Bob of Hamilton, Ohio.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
