Beginning Monday, October 31, 2011 we will be increasing the Mass stipends from $5 to $10 for Sacred Heart and St. Mark. Parishes in the Diocese of Phoenix have increased their stipends to $10 per Mass. The cost of the Perpetual Mass cards will remain the same at $12.00.

Sacred Heart Parish is partnering with St. Mark’s Church in Phoenix. We will be sending our “overflow” Mass
intentions down to St. Mark’s if our Sacred Heart parishioners request it. This will be a great benefit to St. Mark’s Parish where there are few parishioners who can afford a Mass stipend.
Fr. Fausto Penafiel, who is the Pastor at St. Mark’s, would like to send his thanks for the support we are providing his parish with this exchange. Let us know if you are interested in sending your request for a Mass intention to Saint Mark’s Parish and we will be happy to do that for you.

Marge MackinThe family moved to Redondo Beach, Calif., when Marge was 6. Her creativity expressed itself in her stained glass creations and sewing. She was a skilled seamstress and made many of her family's clothes. She was always nicely dressed and loved to wear pieces of her large collection of old and new turquoise jewelry. Marge loved to walk, dance and travel to foreign countries. She will be remembered for her wonderful vim and vigor, sense of humor and singing old songs like "Red Lips, Kiss My Blues Away," quoting phrases such as "Think of it as an adventure," in response to any situation, and creating personalized birthday poems which she wrote in greeting cards to her family.

Bettie Jane Conley

February 3, 1923 - February 12, 2010

Bettie Jane (Johnson) Conley was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Kimball, S.D., to Charles J. Johnson and Laura Mae (Will) Johnson. She attended grade school and high school in Kimball, graduating in 1941. From there, she went to a business college in Rapid City and worked for the U.S. Civil Service in Washington, D.C. In 1942, she transferred to Seattle where she married her high school sweetheart, James Dwain (J.D.) Conley, on March 5, 1943.

Bettie Jane ConleyThey returned to Kimball in 1946 and became the owners of Kimball Dairy. After a couple of years of life on the farm, Bettie Jane joined Stanley Home Products Inc. To her, hosting Stanley parties and recruiting new dealers would be an easier way to make a living - better than milking cows! Soon after joining, she convinced her husband to come on board with Stanley - this led to a 25-year sales career. Stanley took them from South Dakota to North Dakota, then joining Stanley's foreign sales department in Calgary, Alberta, and Vancouver, British Columbia, and back to the USA in Phoenix, Ariz., and ending in Waterloo, Iowa.

At age 49, Bettie Jane and J.D. purchased a mom-and-pop motel in Prescott, Ariz. This was a bit of a change from the sales work she was used to! Missing interacting with people and the sales bug she had acquired working all those years at Stanley led her in a new direction - real estate. It didn't take much convincing from her husband (already in real estate) to stop making beds and start selling houses. In 1974, she became the first woman to be hired by the Pauley and McDonald Realtor group and, in 1979, J.D. and Jane started A-Action Realty. Real estate was so much more than just selling houses. It opened doors to many opportunities and Jane embedded herself within the Prescott community.

She was an active leader in the Soroptimist Club, helping with fundraising activities. She was also active in the Prescott Chamber of Commerce, where she was a founding member of the Prescott Ambassadors. She was a member of the Clarets Club of Sacred Heart Church, and was the charter president of the Prescott Noon Lioness Club. She was a passionate member of that organization and served as president three times. Being involved in her community was one of her greatest pleasures.

She loved to socialize and could usually be heard laughing wherever she went. Bettie Jane was nonstop her entire life - she was even given a charm for her bracelet engraved "too busy and don't have time" - but she was always on time, and for those who knew her and worked with her, she made time. When she did take time to relax, you would probably find her playing cards, crocheting, reconstructing clothes, or baking. She loved purses, shoes, and the color purple. She never threw anything away - if you needed ANYTHING, she probably had it in her purse!

Grateful for having shared her life are husband J.D.; daughter Melanie and husband Robert Nuttall of Scottsdale, Ariz.; granddaughters Ragen and Brandi; grandson Todd; great-grandson Julian; and great-granddaughter Izabel; son Michael and wife Debby of Waterloo, Iowa, and granddaughters Melissa and Heather, her husband Eric Lukes of Stewartville, Minn., great-granddaughters Isabelle and Lily; daughter Marilyn and husband Bill Carney of Prescott Valley, Ariz., and granddaughter Jessica and grandson Jacob; son Mark and wife Patricia of Prescott and grandson Ruston James; and sister-in-law Ellen Johnson of Livermore, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald M. Johnson, of Livermore and granddaughter Ragen Nuttall of Scottsdale.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, a nonprofit organization, at 1065 Ruth St., Suite 104, Prescott, AZ 86301.

Viewing at Wakelin Family Funeral Home is Friday, Feb. 19, 303 Cortez St., Prescott, AZ; 445-2221; family: 4-5 p.m.; friends: 5-7 p.m. Vigil Scripture Service with Tony Humphrey 7 p.m. Mass Service is Saturday, Feb. 20, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 Fleury St., Prescott, AZ, 1 pm. Helen Moser

Helen MoserHelen Moser, devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, went to be with her Lord on March 20, 2010. Helen was born on June 8, 1925, in Argo, Ill., to Martin and Catherine Szkolka. Excelling in her schooling, she met the love of her life, Leonard Otto Moser, and married in 1948. One year later, she began her journey as a mother with the birth of her first son, Len, with sons Barry and Greg following soon after.

Taking on management of her home and the Catholic schooling of her sons, Helen quickly mastered the art of home life, caring with detail for her husband and children. Her love of art and good eye for design inspired her entrepreneurial effort to finance college tuitions by designing, sewing and installing exquisite window treatments for many beautiful homes in the Chicago area.

Helen and Len embraced the empty nest years, exploring the country as they maintained residence in Illinois. There, in 1986, Len died after a long battle with cancer. Having visited Arizona during one of their trips, Helen, smitten by the beauty of Sedona, courageously relocated there. She thoughtfully designed a home on land with a spectacular view of the formations. As a master gardener, she tended the plants there and wherever she lived, with almost as much care and thought as she had given her family. In her later years, her devoted son, Greg, cared lovingly for her in Prescott.

Helen is survived by her sons Len, Barry and Greg; her daughter-in-law, Terri; her grandchildren, Louise Siriani, Jacob, Brittany, Courtney, David, Elaine, Michael and Daniel Moser, and her great-grandchildren, Tony and Alec Siriani.

A Memorial Mass, presided by the Rev. Art Gramaje, will be at 10 a.m. on April 6, 2010, at Sacred Heart Church in Prescott.

William Isaac "Big Bill" Watts

1925 - 2010

William Isaac Watts (1925-2010)On the 4th of July 1925, an ingenious man was born in Valier, Ill., to Thomas J. Watts and Julia (Dalrymple) Watts; they named him William Isaac Watts after his great-grandfather. His family knew him as "Big Bill." He passed away in Prescott, Ariz., on April 8, 2010, at the age of 84 years, nine months and four days.

His first years in the southern Illinois coal-mining community he was surrounded by a loving and hard-working family who were key in America's coal business since 1847. Times had changed and in 1927 his parents moved to Huntington Park, Calif., where Bill was raised. Life was tough from 1929 to 1941 during the Great Depression. However, his father, a produce truck driver, always had plenty of good food. The hard times taught Bill lifelong values of discipline, dedication and commitment. He enjoyed learning math, science and football in school, as well as hunting, fishing and the general outdoors he learned from his father and grandfather. William Isaac Watts (1925-2010) - Air Force pictureHis years at South Gate High were overshadowed by World War II. He had lost a cousin in the RCAF in 1941, so in 1943, Bill, like most of America's young men and women, went in the service to do his part. He became a navigator in the 9th Air Force 315th Troop Carrier Group on the C-47 Dakota in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was in the European Theater of Operations where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and Operation Varsity the deepest penetration air drop ever performed. After the war he settled in the Pacific Northwest where his parents had moved. He graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in Engineering when he met his loving wife Margaret E. Bruneau. They courted and Bill finished school and landed a job during the difficult post war years. They were engaged February 13, 1948, and married June 3, 1950. He spent 35 years with The Boeing Company. He was part of the engineering design and latter management teams on the famous B-52 Bomber, the 707, 720 and 727 commercial aeroplane programs, the Minuteman and Peacekeeper ICBM Programs. Bill was part of the aerospace engineering marvels that shaped and protected this nation. Like many others of this generation, he always stated that it was his and previous generations that sacrificed for our freedoms today. Don't waste it with mediocre change.

William Isaac Watts (1925-2010) - baby pictureBill and Margaret celebrated the births of three children in Seattle, Wash., and moved to Bountiful, Utah, where they raised them. Bill bought a ranch in Roosevelt, Utah, to teach his sons values. After their sons graduated from high school between 1969 and 1976, Bill and Margaret moved to Lompoc, Calif., then Montana and back to Utah before retiring from the Boeing Company in 1986. They designed and built a home overlooking the Snake River in Buhl, Idaho, where they lived until 1994 when they moved to the milder climate in Prescott, Ariz.

Bill is survived by his three sons, Stephen of Camp Verde, Gregory and his wife Val of Prescott and Marcus of Irvine, Calif.; his grandchildren Nydia, Nathan, Robert Leary, Thomas, William, Valerie Kretchmer, Hillary and Miranda; and great-grandchildren.

It is with much sadness that Big Bill, a true patriot and gentleman, one of the last of the greatest generations that ever lived, has now journeyed across the greatest divide and is now resting in peace with his departed loved ones; his recently deceased wife Margaret (Jan. 23, 2010), and his parents, Thomas and Julia Watts.

Visitation will be at 9 a.m. and then a Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 12, 2010, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. His interment will be later that day at 1:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery of Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Center Adult Day Services, 844 Sunset Ave., Prescott, AZ 86305 (to support families dealing with Alzheimer's) or a charity of your own choice.

Bernard (Ben) H. Geyer

Bernard (Ben) H. GeyerBernard (Ben) H. Geyer passed away June 3, 2010, at Rolling Hills Manor in Prescott, Ariz. He was born Aug. 13, 1926, in Hamilton, Ohio, the son of Bernard and Olivia (Frisz) Geyer. Ben was 83 years old.

Ben graduated from MIT with a master's degree in electronic engineering. His career was spent in research and development at G.E., in radar technology and computers in Syracuse, N.Y. He and Emma moved to Prescott in 1990 after his retirement.

Ben loved woodworking and looking at life through the lens of a camera. He was an award-winning photographer.

In 1949, Ben and two others who were junior engineers at G.E. designed an "automatic umpire" system. That system was built and used in 1950 during the Dodgers' spring training camp. However, the umpires didn't like it and the players weren't overly enthusiastic about it and that was the end of it. After QuesTec came into use, an article appeared in the Syracuse newspaper dated Sunday July 20, 2003, about the automatic umpire system Ben and friends built. Ben was quoted in the article: "An engineer prides himself on being ahead of his time, though I must admit that 50 years is a pretty good margin."

The family wishes to thank the staff of Rolling Hills Manor for the wonderful care they gave Ben and the family.

Ben is survived by his bride of 56 years, Emma; his daughters, Diane (Joseph) Woods of Liverpool, N.Y., and Joyce (Ray) Van Orden of Prescott, Ariz.; and sons Bruce of Portland, Ore., Steve (Marytheresa) of Liverpool, N.Y., and Doug (Debi) of Covernty, R.I. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and siblings; sister Rosemary (Marv) Rickling of Las Vegas, Nev.; and brothers Jack (Mary Lou) of Hamilton, Ohio, Dick of Marathon, Fla., and Jim (Judy) of Youngsville, N.C. He was predeceased by his brother Bob of Hamilton, Ohio.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

William H. McCauley

November 21, 1918 - January 15, 2011

A sad day in Prescott, Ariz., Saturday morning Jan. 15, 2011 at 6:08 a.m., as the sun was just beginning to rise over Arizona, the soul of William H. (Mac) McCauley, our beloved "Daddy Bill," ascended to Heaven for his final reward. While our hearts are heavy, we are comforted by the memories we have of this giant of a man in our lives. A man who asked so little, yet gave so much, to so many, here in Prescott over the last 62 years.

William McCauleyFrom the time of Mac's arrival here in 1949, our fair city was changed for the better by his presence. He always faced life with a smile, greeted everyone as a friend, and never let a minute slip by without using it to some good purpose. He will be remembered by most for his musical contributions, starting with playing live music for the square dances on the courthouse plaza in 1949 through the 1950s and '60s and into the '70s. He played benefits for all types of groups, participated in the fiddle contests and bluegrass festivals, Sharlot Hall events, Acker Showcases, parades, and was still playing for the Senior Day Center and others up until just a few months ago at age 92.

Some of the groups he formed and/or played with were The Hayloft Trio, Sam & Mac, The Rhythm Ranglers, the Old Time Fiddler's Association, The Tumbleweeds, and Finger Pickin' Partners with Malia Chase, his companion and musical partner for more than 30 years, just to name a few.

Always the showman, though, Mac was more than willing to take the stage alone, whether in a public setting or merely someone's living room. He could play his foot-operated bass drum, harmonica and guitar at the same time, and intersperse that by singing and dancing for those present.

Surely we could spend the whole day writing more about this unique and memorable character, our Grandfather and "Daddy Bill," who meant so much to all of our family and all those that have known him over the years, but other matters call, so we'll save that for later. Needless to say, this man will be sorely missed by all.

Mac, God broke the mold when he created you. What a ride you had! Rest in peace, and if they allow guitars in Heaven, keep on a-Whompin'. We will meet again, by and by.

Mac was born on Nov. 21, 1918, in Warba, Minn., to Jack and Anna McCauley. Mac left the family farm in 1938 and worked in the CC Camps prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1939 and serving most of his tour in Panama at Fort Clayton in the Panama Canal Zone, returning to the States in 1943 to Fort Bliss, Texas. He was wed to Lavonne Miles and settled in Huntington Park, Calif. until they moved to Prescott in 1949.

Mac served as an usher at Prescott's Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 60 years. He was a Yavapai County Deputy Sheriff in 1955 and 1956. He was a member of the Prescott Jeep club (Posse) for several years through the '50s and into the '60s. Mac was a charter member of the Mile High Homing Club (associated with the American Racing Pigeon Union) and an honorary member of the Whiffle Tree Barn Dancers. He owned and operated Mac's Tire Shop in Miller Valley, where he recapped tires until 1959. From 1960 to 1980, Mac served as a custodian for PUSD first at Lincoln School on Park Avenue, then taking over the gym at the high school on Ruth Street and finally as head custodian at Granite Mountain Middle School. He had two yearbooks dedicated to him. He, as previously mentioned, loved music and spent many years playing guitar in very venue there was locally including the VA Hospital, area nursing homes, the Margaret T. Morris Care Center and all the aforementioned musical groups and as a result became a "Legend in his own time." You can see Mac playing his guitar in the Hayloft Trio portion of the Granite Street Mural, which was completed in 2007.

Mac lost his wife Lavonne in 1978 and is survived by one sister, Della Howe; also Malia Chase, his guardian, caregiver and fiddling partner for over 30 years; three grandsons, Leland Anderson (Johnnie) of Prescott, Larry Anderson, currently of Selma, Ore., and Eddie Anderson (Kathy) of Wasilla, Alaska; 11 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and 30-plus nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 Fleury St., Prescott, followed by an Honor Guard ceremony at the church. There will be a celebration of life from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Rowle Simmons Community Center, 1280 E. Rosser St., Prescott. All his friends and fellow musicians are invited to attend. Please bring your instruments if you are inclined. Refreshments will be served.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to see donations made to the Adult Day Services Center, 826 Sunset Ave., Prescott, Ariz. Mac loved going there and said many times they sure could use a nice big TV.

Please visit www.heritagememorymortuary.com to sign the online guestbook and leave messages. Arrangements were entrusted to the Heritage Memory Mortuary for internment in the Prescott Veteran's Cemetery in a private ceremony on Monday, Jan. 31, 2011.

Francis Joanes

Francis JoanesFrancis ("Magnu") Joanes passed away unexpectedly on July 5, 2011, while on a cruise in Russia with his beloved wife, Hazilda. They were touring from St. Petersburg to Moscow to celebrate her 75th birthday and their 45th wedding anniversary.

Francis was born in Nairobi, Kenya. He met and married the love of his life and soul mate, Hazilda, in April of 1966. They immigrated to the U.S. (Walnut Creek, Calif.) in 1977 in the hopes of providing a better life for their family. They lived in Walnut Creek until 2005 when they moved to Prescott, Ariz., to be closer to their two grandsons.

An accountant by trade, he retired twice in Nairobi, first as a high-level auditor for the Kenyan government, then from a private British corporation. He returned to work in California to support his family, then retired once more. However, on moving to Prescott, he continued as a volunteer treasurer for the homeowner's association to which he belonged.

Francis was a man of deep faith. Over the years, he was active in the church community in Prescott and Walnut Creek as a lector, member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, member of the Pastoral Council, choir member, RCIA member and Eucharistic minister to the sick. He was a man who gave generously of himself and everything he had, down to literally giving the shirt of his back multiple times. He "lived life large" and with passion, enjoying any reason to celebrate! Adults and children alike gravitated to him, his welcoming smile and big hugs. He was an ambassador of God's love and touched so many people - more so than we even know.

Until they are all gathered together in heaven as a family, Francis leaves behind his beloved wife, Hazilda; daughter Louise; sons Marcellus and Tom, daughter-in-law Erin; and grandsons Matt and Noah, who will miss their "Shepai." He also leaves behind his sisters Nasci, Abi and Martha, who will miss their only brother. He also leaves behind many beloved nephews, nieces and other family members who will miss him dearly.

The visitation and Rosary will be at Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home, 303 S. Cortez St., Prescott, on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at 5 p.m. for visitation and Rosary at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m. July 22 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 Fleury St., Prescott, and final commendation at Pioneer Home Cemetery. Gerald Patrick Moore

Gerald "Pat" MoorePat Moore, 76, passed away on Aug. 25, 2011. He was born on St. Patrick's Day 1935, and has always gone by his middle name. Pat was born in New York City, N.Y., and moved as a boy to Tucson, where his three children were later born.

He brought the family to San Diego in 1964 and lived in Southern California until 2006 when he and wife Patti returned to his beloved Arizona.

Pat loved Prescott! He loved dressing in Western attire, loved sitting on the deck of his home communing with God and nature (and a good cigar!). He was an active member of the Sunrise Lions Club until his illness made it too difficult to attend. Becoming Sheriff of the Prescott Corral of Westerners International was one of his proudest moments.

Pat is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Patti; three children, Gary, Jeff and Kimmy; and seven amazing grandchildren, Cameron, Breanna, Sarah, Michael, Ryan, Anastasia and Acacia. His former daughter-in-law, Dena Moore, and former sister-in-law Debbi Mercado were a big part of his and Patti's life and provided much love and support through the years.

Pat was a charismatic, gun-toting intellectual conservative with an unyielding attitude on free-market economics. But he will be remembered most for his positive spirit and will be greatly missed by his many friends and his family.

A funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, at Sacred Heart Parish Church, 150 Fleury Ave. in Prescott.

A celebration of his life will take place at 2 p.m. Oct. 1, 2011, at Thumb Butte Park.
