Sacred Heart Youth &
Young Adult Ministry
Sacred Heart Youth Ministry website link

As you may know, Sacred Heart Parish is facing very difficult economic times. In order to be accountable to our budget, we had to realign our Ministry Staff. After much discernment and prayer, it was decided to eliminate the Youth Minister Position. The Youth Ministry Program will continue and is currently being restructured. We would like to thank Vincent Gallegos, from the bottom of our hearts, for all of his years of dedication and good service to our youth.

Currently (Fall Semester 2011) middle school meets on Thursday evenings from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM and high school meets from 7:15 PM - 8:30 PM at the Youth Center.

INFANT BAPTISM GUIDELINES
Holy Family Icon

Dear Parents,

After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove [and] coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:16-17.

Our parish family here at Sacred Heart welcomes you and your child. Baptism marks a significant event in the life of your child and your family, for through Baptism your child becomes a member of the Body of Christ, the Church. Moreover, the newly baptized is given the status of being an adopted child of God. Baptism also opens the doors to the other sacraments, which allows for spiritual growth and support.

We ask that you read the following guidelines carefully. If some questions should arise, please do not hesitate to contact us. We want your child’s baptism to be a spiritual and memorable event.
May God bless you as you prepare to begin this journey of faith with your child.

PRE-BAPTISM CLASS: As your child grows in faith and knowledge, you as parents are the most influential force in his/her life. Your example through the active participation in your faith life will help your child come to Christ. Therefore, it is important that you see the value in preparing yourself as well as your child to take this significant step. We ask both parents to attend the Parent Class if they have not attended in the past two years.

GODPARENTS: Your choice of godparents is very important. A godparent is a witness to your child in modeling the faith life of the entire community. Through you and their godparents, your child will come to know Christ. Children need to have at least one Godparent, but it is strongly recommended that they would have two, one male and one female. Godparents must be Catholic, at least sixteen years of age, have received the three sacraments of initiation (Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation) and be active in their faith – attending Mass on a weekly basis. If they are married, the marriage must be a valid, recognized marriage in the Catholic Church (in the presence of a Catholic priest or deacon).

A baptized person of another Christian denomination cannot be a godparent. They are invited to be a Christian Witness if baptized in another denomination, and we welcome them, but they cannot be the godparent of record. The godparents represent the community of faith in which the child is being baptized. For this reason it is required that only those who are practicing Catholics be godparents. In addition, the godparents are chosen to instill and support the faith of the community in which the child will one day receive the sacraments.

In addition to attending the baptism class, the parents must provide the church office with the following DOCUMENTATION:

1. The completed data form which can be obtained from the church Office.
2. A copy of the regular birth certificate or copy of the preliminary Hospital Certificate.
3. The names of the final choice(s) for godparents with correct spelling as they will appear on the
Baptismal Certificate.
4. If classes were taken elsewhere, a letter will be required stating where and when you have taken classes.

SCHEDULING: Baptisms will only be scheduled when the parents have attended the baptism class or provided a certificate/ letter of attendance elsewhere, and all documents have been provided.
To schedule the baptism you must either come to the church office or call the church office when you have completed all the requirements in order to get your name on a specific schedule for baptism.

GODPARENTS: Frequently Asked Questions

"Anne-Marie and Baby" - © Maureen Henry

What are the requirements to be a Godparent?

• A Catholic who has received all 3 sacraments of Initiation: Baptism , Holy Communion, and Confirmation.
• They must be at least 16 years old.
• A practicing Catholic who attends Mass weekly. • If married, a person who was married in the Catholic Church. (Please note that being separated and/or legally divorced does not in itself prevent a person from serving as a godparent. However, one who is separated or divorced must be living as a single person and not living with someone else.)

Must we have both a godfather and a godmother?

No. While it is customary to have both a godfather and a godmother, the sacrament of Baptism requires a minimum of one godparent. (Note: it is not possible to have two males or two females as godparents.)

Do Godparents have to attend the Baptism class?

This is highly recommended! They will be your child’s godparents forever, so it is great for them to show that commitment from the very beginning! If they cannot attend the class here at Sacred Heart, they are encouraged to attend an equivalent class offered at their own parish.

Can I just have a Christian witness instead of a godparent?

No. Remember that a baptized non-Catholic is not precisely a godparent. Thus a Christian Witness may be chosen only if a Catholic godparent has already been chosen for your child. A Christian Witness is chosen in addition to a Catholic godparent not in place of a Catholic godparent.

ANNUAL CELEBRATING MARRIAGE EVENT 2012

"Putting on the Ring" - © Roger Kirby

If you and your spouse were looking forward to celebrating an important wedding anniversary with Bishop Olmsted in 2012, the event is still on, but the date is changing.

The 2012 Diocese of Phoenix Celebrating Marriage Event for jubilee anniversary couples this year is moving from the closest Saturday to Valentine Day...Feb. 11th to September 22nd.

This timing change on the calendar anticipates that this event will be changing in 2013 to a September Diocesan Marriage Conference, focused on evangelization and renewal for marriages of any length.

For this year’s registration, visit www.ourcovenantoflovephx.org or call Mike at (602) 354-2355.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL

St. Vincent de Paul logo

Inspired by Gospel values, our members come together to grow spiritually as we serve others. Whether we’re making home visits or meeting people that need help in our office, we’re serving the Lord.

If you’d like to learn more about this international organization, check us out any Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. downstairs in the church. It takes eight people to fill the volunteer positions each weekday, and one of these positions might be a perfect fit.

January 2012 -

It’s the beginning of a new year, and the perfect time to thank our many volunteers for their loyal help. Did you know that only the Thrift Store Manager, Asst. Manager, and warehouse workers are paid employees? Everyone else are volunteers. A big thank you to all for your hard work. The fact that so many people donate time to SVdP – both at the Thrift Store and the Conference -- shows how much they value working for the Lord.

As you know, the Conference on Summit St. runs on "volunteer-power." We need more volunteers so we can serve the hungry in a timely manner. Is the Lord calling you to donate a few hours each week to feed his children? Join us any Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. downstairs to learn more.

PRESCOTT COMMUNITY CUPBOARD FOOD BANK

Did you know that Sacred Heart Parish is a member Church of Prescott Community Cupboard Food Bank?

The Prescott Community Cupboard Food Bank is a community-sponsored organization of eight member churches of which Sacred Heart is a founding member. Fr. Fred Le Claire’s (currently pastor of St. Catherine Laboure Parish in Chino Valley) father helped establish the Food Bank back in the 1970s. We are a 501 (c) 3 non-profit Food Bank and an all-volunteer organization. We always need volunteers to assist in distribution and collection of the food. Our distribution site is located at:

313 W Goodwin Street, “Rusing Square “across from the Goodwin Pharmacy.

Our clients are processed with our partner Catholic Charities and we provide 12 nutritionally balanced meals for each family member that seeks our assistance. We provided over 150,000 meals in 2009.
