Safe Environment

The mission of the Safe Environment Training is to prevent sexual, physical or emotional abuse and/or neglect of children and young people through continued education, building awareness, and maintaining a commitment to keeping all children and young people safe.

The Diocese of Phoenix and Sacred Heart Parish & School are committed to protecting all children and young people by offering several abuse prevention educational sessions.  The Diocesan Policy and Procedures for the Protection of Minors requires all clergy, employees, volunteers that directly serve minors, volunteers that work in food pantries/provide meal service, provide ministerial service in private homes, adults administering service in an after school program, and minors to attend training on an annual basis.

Renewal is required annually here at Sacred Heart. You can renew on-line by going to www.dioceseofphoenix.org  Click on "offices".  It will take you to page where you can click tab that says "renew online".  Every volunteer at the parish and all parents of school and preschool students are required to take this training annually in order to participate in the ministry, classroom and on field trips.

Different training sessions are available for parents, youth and those serving in ministries. The very first class in the Safe Environment program (the foundation class) is done on-site at the parish. Attending this class at any of the Tri-City area parishes is acceptable. Individual Safe Environment Program Descriptions:

Protecting God's Children for Adults

This is the foundation training program for the prevention of child sexual abuse used in the Diocese of Phoenix. Two videos are the centerpiece of the training: A Time to Protect God's Children and A Plan to Protect God's Children. This program covers:

  • Facts and myths about child sexual abuse
  • How offenders gain access to children/youth
  • Red flags to watch for in those who may abuse
  • Warning signs in children/youth who may be victims of abuse
  • Methods for screening employees and volunteers
  • Monitoring church programs to keep them safe
  • Appropriate and inappropriate interactions and behaviors with children/youth
  • Responding to allegations of abuse

Called to Protect™ for Youth

This program—the first of its kind—teaches youth grades 6th -12th about their physical, emotional, and behavioral boundaries and how to respond if someone tries to violate them. Youth learn why it can be difficult to report abuse that has occurred to them or someone they know. It also teaches them words to say if they, or someone they know, are being abused. Parent/ guardian permission is required for attendance of these sessions.

Please note that there is a copy of the Policies and Procedures of the Diocese of Phoenix available in the Parish Office.  If you would like a copy please come by and pick one up.  Thank you.
