CITIZENSHIP DAY - THANK YOUs

Northern Arizona's First Citizenship Day!
Watch Mike Johnsen (Diocese of Phoenix Deacon Candidate, 2012 Cohort)
explain more about Citizenship Day:
On October 15th Sacred Heart School Gym was the site of the First Northern Arizona Citizenship Day workshop. This project was an example of putting our faith into action by serving members of our community.
Individuals with Legal Permanent Resident status, those who have had their “Green Card” for at least 5 years, or at least 3 years if married to a U.S. Citizen for 3 years, and who met other important criteria, were be assisted by trained volunteers of Sacred Heart Parish and other faith communities in completing applications for naturalization. This work protected the applicants from various types of scams and fraud that have occurred as well as avoid excessive charges from others who claim to be professionals. Some applicants have paid as much as $10,000 for assistance with no guarantee of approval.
Thank you for your prayers for the success of the event which has been embraced by local elected leaders, state legislators and our Congressional representatives as an important project for Northern Arizona respecting the Dignity of the Human Person.
It is no secret that Sacred Heart Parish, like most others, has been impacted by the current economic woes. This project could not have been as successful as it was without support from our local business community. We wish to thank those local businesses for their generosity in making this such a successful “first-time” event. IKON Copier Services donated the use of two copiers so that the applicants could make necessary copies of their documents. AIM Mail Centers provided passport grade photos at discounted prices for the applicants. Taco Don’s provided food for the Volunteers as they worked through the day. Without the volunteers of Sacred Heart Parish and the surrounding community, Citizenship Day would not have happened. The day was an example of loving God and loving Neighbor. This was a true community effort and example of living Gospel values.
For more information please check out the project on the internet at the parish website and at www.nacitizenship.com .

INSTITUTION OF ACOLYTE,
Mike Johnsen
On September 2, 2011 Sacred Heart Parishioner and Deacon Candidate, Mike Johnsen, will become an instituted acolyte through the Rite of Acolyte at St. Mary’s Basilica, in Phoenix, by Bishop Thomas Olmsted.
I want to ask everyone to continue to give Mike your encouragement and support and please keep him and the entire 2012 Diaconate Cohort in your prayers as they make this very important commitment in their journey towards ordination.
Within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix and the formation of permanent deacons there are steps, which for men interested in the permanent diaconate, are necessary for development and discernment. The steps include Inquirer, Aspirant, and Candidate. Within the Candidate steps there are additional stages in the journey such as for Candidate I which includes preparation for the Rite of Installation as Lector, Candidate II includes preparation for the Rite of Installation as Acolyte. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “Lay people who possess the required qualities can be admitted permanently to the ministries of lector and acolyte.” More specifically the *General Instruction of the Roman Missal(GIRM) states “The acolyte is instituted to serve at the altar and to assist the priest and deacon. In particular, it is his responsibility to prepare the altar and the sacred vessels and, if it is necessary, as an extraordinary minister, to distribute the Eucharist to the faithful.” The instituted acolyte is considered a step in the process of formation for ordination of deacons and priests. It is a function of the Church which helps in preparing men for those roles. Through the role of instituted acolyte the candidate for the diaconate receives valuable training and experience in assisting the priest and deacon in the Mass.
Please keep Mike Johnsen in your prayers in his last year before he is ordained as a Deacon.
Thank you and God Bless.

FROM OUR PASTOR
July 17, 2011
My dear parishioners:
For those who have followed the previous financial reports in this bulletin, it is apparent that this past fiscal year has challenged us in both our revenues and expenses. There were some notable factors that contributed to the parish’s budget deficit:
• 5% cut from plate collections =- $50,000; additional 3% deduction = $37,918 with one less Sunday Collection of $20,000 = $57,918
• Over $30,000 in extraordinary, unforeseen plant/maintenance expenses
• A Fundraising/Development shortfall of $151,797.24.
• Accounting for depreciation: $129,600.
Given conservative estimates regarding the projected Sunday collections and following the strong recommendation from the Parish Finance Council, we needed to cut expenses totaling $175,000 from the 2011-2012 budget. These are some highlights from these difficult cuts:
• A major reduction of salaries for three employees
• The Claretian Missionaries took a 10% cut in payroll
• Parish staff will take two weeks of unpaid work furlough
• Sold the school bus and one of the priest’s cars
• Elimination of the full time Youth Minister position and part time maintenance position
• Each ministry department of the parish cut 10% from the previous budget
• A combination of repair maintenance, reduced salaries, and reduced services has allowed us to adjust our total budget for 2011/2012 fiscal budget saving $181,180.91.
These cuts are difficult but necessary if we are to be fiscally responsible to the members of the parish and the resources that you so generously share.
I want to start a Development Council that will plan and implement positive actions in the areas of stewardship, development, and major fundraising. I hope that this will help us exceed our projections for our various revenue streams in the upcoming fiscal year.
I pray that the Lord will continue to guide us in all things—even finances. I believe that our God is a God of providence and that with all of us doing our part, we will not only establish ourselves financially, but flourish in all of our ministries. If we focus on our mission and goals, Sacred Heart will grow in both our faith and in our community.

Support Pro-life Legislation
Take Action!
Please Ask Governor Brewer to Sign HB 2416
The Arizona Legislature has just passed important pro-life legislation (HB 2416) that would require women to be offered the chance to view an ultrasound of their unborn children before an abortion.
HB 2416 would also, among other things, prohibit the practice of using telemedicine for abortions. In Iowa, doctors are allowed to talk over an electronic device to a patient they have not examined in person and then push a button distributing abortion pills to the patient. HB 2416 would stop this practice from spreading to Arizona.
In a nutshell, HB 2416 will help protect women and their unborn babies and deserves to become law.
Accordingly, please take a moment and follow the "Take Action" link to encourage Governor Jan Brewer to sign HB 2416.

GIFTS OF LIFE - GIFTS OF LOVE
The Knights of Columbus
are sponsoring Organ Donor Sunday on February 20, 2011 and will have forms available at both entrances of the Church. You can also request the form to be emailed to you from dgallegos@sacredheartprescott.com or you can DOWNLOAD THE FORM here.
For more information, please visit LifeDonor.org and DonateLifeAZ.org
CCC #2296:
"Organ transplants are in conformity with the moral law if the physical and psychological dangers and risks to the donor are proportionate to the good that is sought for the recipient. Organ donation after death is a noble and meritorous act and is to be encouraged as an expression of generous solidarity. It is not morally acceptable if the donor or his proxy has not given explicit consent. Moreover, it is not morally admissible directly to bring about the disabling mutilation or death of a human being, even in order to delay the death of other persons."
MYTHS ABOUT ORGAN DONATION:
Myth: My drivers license indicates that I am an organ donor.
FACT: Licenses in Arizona no longer show your intent. It is necessary to carry a separate card next to your license to indicate that you are a donor. This card is issured plus a sticker to place on your license when you register with the Arizona Donor Registry.
Myth: Wealthy people can buy organs.
FACT: It's a federal crime to buy or sell organs and tissues. Factors such as race, income or celebrity status are never considered when determining who receives an organ. The organ allocation and distribution system is based on many factors including blood type, length of time of the waiting list, geographical location, severity of illness and other medical criteria. There is no way to buy a place on the national wating list.
Myth: Doctors may let me die to transplant my organs.
FACT: Doctors who treat patients at the time of death have nothing to do with donation or transplantation of the patient's organs and tissues. Every effort is made to save the patient's life before donation can be considered.
Myth: It costs money to donate.
FACT: There is no cost to be an organ and tissue donor. Donation is a gift. Any costs associated with transplantation are included in the surgical, medical and hospital costs of the reciepient.
Myth: Donation disfigures the body and delays the funeral.
FACT: Donation does not change the way a person looks in a casket. Donated organs and tissues are removed surgically as in a routine operation. Most donations take place within 24 hours after death and do not delay a funeral arrangements.
Myth: My religion opposes donation.
FACT: All major religions -- Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism -- fully support donation. It is a charitable act.
Myth: Donation is painful for the donor's family.
FACT: Studies show that donation most often provides immediate and long-term consolation. Donation can be especially comforting when the death is unexpected and the donor is young.
Contact: 520-887-7847, lifedonor@msn.com for further information or to schedule a program featuring donor family members, living donors or organ recipients.
Pope Benedict XVI said in 2008, that organ donation is an "act of love ... that remains as a genuine witness of charity which knows how to look beyond death so that life always wins."

The Prescott Community Cupboard Food Bank is a community-sponsored organization of eight member churches of which Sacred Heart is a founding member. Fr.
