On Dec. 6, the feast day of St. Nicholas, children from Sacred Heart Catholic Preschool placed one of their shoes out in the hallway while they learned about St. Nicholas in their classroom.
Nicholas was a 4th century Greek Bishop in an area now known as Turkey. Both of his parents died when he was young, leaving him with a great fortune. Nicholas was determined to give his inheritance to the poor. Today, children in European countries leave their shoes outside on St. Nicholas Eve to be filled with presents. Our modern-day Santa Claus is derived from the gift-giving of St. Nicholas. The preschoolers found a holy card about St. Nicholas and a “gold coin.”
